You can just make out the bottom row of tiles that were cleaned by normal means, with the grout lines still yucky and stained looking. Compare that to the rest of the picture, where that fantastic product has made such a great change. The grout lines are beige! Who knew? Not even the steam cleaner machine did anywhere near this well.

standing up near it's final resting place. Still heaps to do yet before it's secured and functional. ETA: This is the cabinet that sprained/hairline fractured my left thumb! When I tried to scoot it into place by myself, those black plastic legs broke (front) and the cabinet fell forward. In the split section, I only thought of the cost of replacing the cabinet and how I'd had to have it delivered, so I caught it, and messed up my left thumb, as well as heaps of ugly purple bruising all over! Next time, I'd let it fall! LOL.

After these redecorations, we had some plumbing work done, and the plumber had to break out some tiles and gypboard to fix the plumbing. This means I'll have to repair the gyp, and remove the other tiles in the area, finding some contrasting tiles to do that area. Suggestions? The current ones are beige with brown. The boarder has jungle colours.

Craft area: uses old dining table, and old vanity dresser with the mirror removed. I still have to get a new chair to replace this crooked one, but this area is nearly finished now. Moved and cleaned up everything, added rail with hanging organisers for handy access to most used supplies like tape, scissors, punches, colour pencils and pens, etc.

IKEA table as a desk (footstool hiding underneath - chair still has to be put together) and kitchen cabinet with another table top as the top. The things you see in the cabinet will be organised, and the old drawers currently in there will be emptied into proper cartons. I have the drawer fronts to make into a door but have to get some more hardware and drill the holes to attach the hinges.

Please ignore the cleaning spray, as I lifted this to clean the grill. This is what the grill looks like when the ceramic top is lifted up on its brace, and the splash pan and grill tray are removed for cleaning. Reno is more than just putting together and hanging cabinets. There has to be a plan in place, remembering detaila like leaving room for the grill to open, while keeping things close enough to look nice. The left corner cabinet will be not as wide in the back part as the current one, but we'll have more properly used space because it will have the carousel. Therefore, the stove will move a bit to the left in this picture, and the mop, squeegy, dust mop, bucket, and bin wil find a new home, to be replaced by a 30cm cabinet with a shelf. Not sure yet what will be stored there, but the countertop next to the stove for a pot landing will be handier than anything, since I"m right-handed. I already purchased the silicon pad that will go on top to rest a hot pot. This countertop will also come in handy when I want to crockpot, as there is an unused power point behind the fridge to plug into, and it will be just wide enough for my crockpot sitting sideways.

IKEA has greatly improved our organisation in the kitchen. From the hanging knife rack over the stove, which makes cooking so much more convenient, to the racks on the wall that hold everything from utensils, to spices, to paper towels, to Jono's morning vitamins (keeping them out of the moisture areas). I bought a nice stainless steel drainer that has two levels, instead of the white one pictured here. It came with this short basket, far too short for the intended cutlery usage, but perfect with a minor squeeze adjustment with pliers to hang on the far left of the left rack, under the mixer, holding about 2 dozen Lipton herbal tea bags, and some tall instant tea and coffee packets in the back, supported by the wall. On the countertop is my replacement blender, which I adore, as it has a metal connector for the spinning mechanism, rather than the plastic one like the one that destroyed itself crushing frozen berries. Now I can go back to making healthy smoothies!

This needs minor cosmetic fixes, but it's staying as it is. I like the height and depth of these cabinets. They provide good food storage, virtually free from all bugs since they are in a wall alcove by themselves, away from windows or sink drains. When renovation is complete, the bottom will be storage for bottles of juice, fizzy, coke, as well as bulk buy paper goods, etc. The top will then have an extra shelf plus for dry goods. I might find a way to install some fixtures inside eventually, but probably not, because it seems to work well as is.

This is what the old sink cabinet looks (looked) like before renovation. Water from an old dishwasher (long since removed and replaced) leaded into the chipboard cabinet, ruining the flooring, walls, backing, and the shelf. I ripped the shelf out ages ago because it was a saggy, soggy mess, and added a piece of shelf I took out of the linen closet to the bottom for extra support over the damaged cabinet floor.

Another view of the bracing. From the front, the bottom looks like a big drawer, with a smaller one above it, but instead, it's one big pull out unit with drawer space. The top of the sink cabinet has a mini-drawer looking false front bracketed on. I'll add three handles to complete the look. Inside will be a single shelf just below the in-sink-erator, pipes, and water filtration system, leaving nooks and crannies for minor storage. This will probably house the bottles too big to fit in the bottom drawer, yet clear the shelf. That shelf has a water-barrier tray to catch leaks and drain them out the front, as does the very bottom of the cabinet below the drawer. The drawer itself is lined with a similar material for dampness or leaking bottles. Cleaning supplies normally kept under the sink will store here.

One of the construction steps I had to do was to awl a minor hole to prepare for a screw. The material where this needed to be done was so tough that it bent the tip of the manual mechanism awl! That gives me confidence this kitchen will last for a while.

Out of a $5 door from IKEA's as is department and a thin, tall IKEA kitchen cabinet, I fashioned this liquor cabinet to free shelves of the bottles of Bailey's and other nice liquors, as well as some white wine glasses, which are used for making my favourite drink, a White Russian. I never enjoyed White Russians more before coming to Australia and experiencing them with coffee-flavoured milk. Yummy, yummy. Total cost for the cabinet was $61 all told. I might change out the recycled brass piano hinge for a sparkly silver one down the road, but it works well for now.

Here's the cabinet where we are keeping it (for now?), filled with the things that were taking up precious cabinet room in the pantry. We rarely drink, so our duty-free buys when we go through the airports are starting to stack up. Either we need to drink more, or stop buying them when we travel. ;) Bonus points for figuring out my favourite mixed drink based on the contents.

This is the bottom of the archway between kitchen/dining room and the living room carpet. For a long time, the ugly metal carpet strip with the even uglier rubber tread has been pulling up on the side from years of wear and tear, and has had a throw rug hiding the damage and keeping our bare/stocking feet safe (since neither of us likes shoes). I pulled all that up to change out to this new-fangled type of tread that involves drilling holes in the masonry, adding these plugs with funny tops which slide into the bottom of the tread, remaining invisible. However, it's much, much more difficult than the sales clerk led me to believe, and I don't think my home drill is up for the task.

I have a love affair with this cordless drill (sh-h-h-h) and the power cells that change out. I "splurged" on a backup one when I bought the drill, meaning that I can charge one and still have the other to use. No waiting for the charge cycle to complete. Here I was drilling the first hole for the tread, and the drillbit got a bit stuck. It looked funny, like the drill was floating in the air, that I had to take this picture. This weekend I'll have to rent a shop speed drill for this job.

I didn't intend to start demo today, but frustration with the stalled tread install, coupled with greatly wanting to tell someone off when I need to butt out instead, plus a dash of PMS, and away we go.

Green! Puke Green!

The previous owner either had an intense love affair with this shade of green, or seriously over purchased the external trim paint and decided to finish up the cans on every available, paintable surface in the house. I don't know whether to be horrified, or laugh, that I found more of this nasty green painted on the cabinet pieces, previously hidden by the tiled kickboard. It looks like they must have painted it that green, and then later tiled the front. I guess all you can do is laugh. Don't look at my toenail polish. I'm off to City on Tuesday to use my lovely pedicure gift certificate, from my darlling husband.

This is the work in progress on the sink cabinet and cabinet to the left, which didn't have a separating wall (i.e., three doors, one cabinet). That black monstrocity is the in-sink-erator, which I love, but the base is so big. Then the drain pipes which exit out the back, and finally the water filtration system on the right, moved from the back wall where I was demo'g

After I knocked the cabinet floor out, along with the support for the left cabinet. That horrible paint job on the left is a single coat from some leftover wall paint used in the kitchen, which I ran over the wall because that far left cabinet was missing for several weeks, and the rest of the cabinets began at that line. It just looked better, from a distance of course, than having a big gaping off-white section before I could get to the rest of this project.
